Oracle Database Patch Version Query
In Oracle - the 'patch' number is the full version string of the database (eg: you really have 8.1.6.0 or 8.1.6.1 or 8.1.6.2 - there may even be a fifth digit in some cases). The owhat command can be used on various executables and libraries within Oracle as well for one off patches thay may or may not have been applied. Use the server patch to update your deployment to Oracle Database Appliance 18.5. You can also optionally use this patch to apply the October 2018 Oracle Database Release Update (RU) to the database homes in your Oracle Database Appliance deployment. However, since vulnerabilities affecting Oracle Database and Oracle Fusion Middleware versions may affect Oracle E-Business Suite products, Oracle recommends that customers apply the April 2019 Critical Patch Update to the Oracle Database and Oracle Fusion Middleware components of Oracle E-Business Suite. Aug 05, 2013 MOS notes about patches, patch sets, PSU, SRU and bundle patches: Introduction to Oracle Recommended Patches This MOS notes is the main entry to the Oracle recommended patches. It includes further links to Oracle Database, Oracle Enterprise Manager, Oracle. Oracle Major releases – Designated by the 2nd place in the version number (e.g. 11.2.0.x) and shown as the wider red bar in the Roadmap. — Starting from Oracle 12.2 Oracle uses a new patching concept based on RUs RURs patches. — Before Oracle release 12.2 following patching concept applies: – Oracle Patch sets – Designated by the 4th place in the version number (e.g.

Oracle Database Release Roadmap
To help you plan ahead, below is a roadmap that captures Oracle Database Releases (incl. annual and patch sets) from 11.2 onward, showing their lifetime support stages (Premier, Extended) and duration in relationship to the overall life of the Release Family. For a table with this data, see Table 3 - Patching End Dates below.
How To Interpret The Roadmap
The Roadmap shown below is a visual representation of our past and current release models detailing their Lifetime Support Policies for each family (Premier - shown in dark blue, Extended - shown in light blue) and Error Correction patching end-dates for each patch set or annual release that belong to an LSP family (Non-terminal patch sets and Annual releases - shown in red, Terminal patch sets and Long term annual releases - shown in green).
- (Pre-12.2)--Major Release Model (e.g. 11.2, 12.1). Major releases used interim Patch Set releases to provide new features and well-tested patches (e.g. 11.2.0.2, 11.2.0.3, 11.2.0.4, 12.1.0.2)
- (12.2 onward)--Annual Release Model (e.g. 12.2, 18c, 19c) Annual releases provide new features and well-tested patches on an yearly basis. For LSP purposes, 18c and 19c are grouped into the 12.2 Family.
- For details on the Lifetime Support Policy (Premier, Extended, Sustaining), see Lifetime Support Policy - Oracle Technology Products.
- For details on the Error Correction Policy (Patching end dates and grace periods), see Database, FMW, EM Grid Control, and OCS Software Error Correction Support Policy (Doc ID 209768.1).
- For details on Global Extended Support Fee Waivers, see Oracle Software Technical Support Policies Section 3 'Lifetime Support' subtitle 'Exceptions'. During the waiver window, you will continue to receive the same level of Support that you had under Premier Support. After an Extended Support waiver expires, you will need to cover your databases with ES or a ULA that includes ES.
Figure 1 - Database Release Roadmap
Beginning with Release 12.2: New versions release annually with the version representing the release year. The release originally planned as 12.2.0.2 was released as 18c, and the release originally planned as 12.2.0.3 released as 19c. For Lifetime Support purposes, Releases 18c and 19c will be under the 12.2c Release Family. Release 19c is the last release ('long term support' release) for the 12.2 Family. Instead of Patch Sets, Patch Set Updates, and Database Bundle Patches, new releases are maintained with Updates and Revisions. For more information see Update and Revisions for Database Proactive Patch Program (Doc ID 2285040.1).
Releases 12.1 and earlier: Patch sets were released periodically. For Database 11.2 and 12.1, the terminal (last) patch set has been released. Proactive patches such as Patch Set Updates (PSU) are released only on those terminal patch sets.

Recommended Upgrade Path
Oracle recommends the following upgrade options:
- Now that 19c has released on most major platforms, Oracle's stance on upgrading has shifted away from 18c as an option and is now focusing only on 19c.
- If you are currently running 11.2.x/12.1.x you will need to upgrade to the terminal release for the product you are running and then continue the upgrade process by upgrading to the 19c Database (Long term support release).
- If you are currently running 12.2.0.1, please upgrade to 19c before the error correction grace period expires.
The purpose of these recommendations is to help you stay within the guidelines of Lifetime Support and Error Correction Policies (allowing you to avoid costly support exceptions), and to encourage you to take advantage of the new features that are available in the latest product releases.
For questions related to certification combinations and Lifetime Support agreements with other Oracle products like Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle JD Edwards, Oracle PeopleSoft, and Oracle Siebel, please contact your Oracle Account Representative.
